Silent protest held to draw attention to violence against women
In Düzce, housewife Emine Gülçebi Zabunoğlu applied 'violence makeup' to her face to draw attention to violence against women. Passersby stopped to take a second look at Zabunoğlu.
Düzce-based housewife Emine Gülçebi Zabunoğlu held a silent protest on Istanbul Street and at the Millet Bahçesi (Nation's Garden) in observance of International Women's Day.
Seeking to say "stop" to violence against women, Zabunoğlu applied makeup to her face to create the appearance of bruises and wounds.
Passersby who saw Zabunoğlu, who wore a sign around her neck reading "The screams of silence" and "No to violence against women," recorded her with their mobile phones.
"LET THESE MURDERS END NOW"
Stating that she took action to draw attention to the recent rise in violence against women, Emine Gülçebi Zabunoğlu said, "Women do not deserve to die. The killing of women is featured on the news every evening. I cannot bear the crying of those children, or women being subjected to violence and murdered. No mother deserves to be killed. I cannot watch the news in the evenings because of the femicides. Let these murders be put to an end now."
