Site management files complaint against owned dog: Dog to be sent to shelter by court order

Melahat Serdar, who lives in her own home at the Metro Site in the Eryaman district of Ankara, adopted a dog named Sofya that was pulled from the rubble after the February 6 earthquakes. The site management, which had been targeting the dog for some time, filed a complaint and initiated a lawsuit. The site manager, arguing that animals cannot be kept on the premises, demanded the dog's eviction. In the expert report prepared as a result of the lawsuits filed, it was emphasized that the dog was not aggressive.

According to the report by Sarya Toprak from BirGün, it was stated that the dog is registered in the PETVET system, that it is a non-purebred dog, that its vaccinations are up to date, that the dog does not exhibit any aggressive behavior, and that it is not a breed on the list of prohibited breeds determined by laws in our country.

However, it was noted that with a higher court decision, the dog named Sofya must be evicted within 10 days as of last Monday. It was emphasized that if the dog is not evicted, enforcement officers will come to the house accompanied by a veterinarian to forcibly take Sofya to a shelter.

Explaining that the site manager went door-to-door collecting signatures, Serdar described what she went through as follows:

“There are people in the complex who keep birds and cats, but we are the only ones being targeted. With the 'massacre law' currently in the spotlight, they want to send my dog to a shelter. We will use all our legal rights not to give her up. We submitted our petition to the appellate court, but enforcement officers arrived last Monday. They said we have to evict Sofya by the end of this month.

If we didn't take Sofya out for walks, no one would even know she was there. She is such a quiet dog. We are not disturbing anyone. Our manager went door-to-door in the complex asking everyone to complain about us. The manager is someone with the mentality that 'angels do not enter a house where a dog enters.' When my daughter was walking Sofya, he even threatened her by wagging his finger and saying, 'It is strictly forbidden.' This is nothing but malice.”
