Snow alert begins in Istanbul: Ministry announces measures taken
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has announced the measures taken due to adverse weather conditions expected in Istanbul between February 19-21. Flight numbers in air traffic have been reduced.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has announced the measures taken at Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport due to the snowfall and icing expected in Istanbul between February 19-21, 2025.
According to the Ministry's statement, the Meteorological Emergency Committee meeting evaluated the effects of weather conditions on air traffic and decided on capacity reductions and flight cancellations.
FLIGHTS TO BE REDUCED AT ISTANBUL AIRPORT
At Istanbul Airport, flight capacity has been reduced by 15 percent for Wednesday, February 19, while this rate has been set at 20 percent for Friday, February 21. At the airport, where an average of 1,000 flights are carried out daily, it is anticipated that approximately 150 flights will be canceled on February 19 and approximately 200 flights on February 21 in line with this.
GRADUAL FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS AT SABIHA GÖKÇEN
At Sabiha Gökçen Airport, while no flight cancellations are anticipated for February 19, 10 percent of flights will be canceled on Thursday, February 20. In this context, Pegasus Airlines will cancel 46 flights, and Ajet Airlines will cancel 22 flights.
A decision was also made to cancel 15 percent of flights for Friday, February 21, as a precaution. Accordingly, Pegasus will cancel 68 flights, and Ajet will cancel 34 flights.
AIRLINES AND TEAMS STANDING BY
The Ministry's statement noted that flight crew schedules at both airports have been reviewed and adjustments have been made for crews with critical shifts. Furthermore, it was reported that the number of standby teams has been increased and that airline companies have taken additional measures to ensure their operations are not disrupted.
