Social media access to require e-Devlet: The era of verification codes

Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek made statements regarding the social media regulation, which has once again come to the agenda following school attacks.

Stating that a regulation for social media has become mandatory, Gürlek noted that with the regulation currently under discussion in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), access to platforms will be granted via a code obtained from e-Devlet.

"VERIFICATION CODE FROM E-DEVLET WILL BE REQUIRED FOR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS"

Responding to questions from Ahmet Hakan on CNN Türk, Gürlek said the following regarding the regulation that includes an age limit for social media:

"There is a regulation in Parliament by our Ministry of Family for children who have not reached the age of 15. A person who wants to use a social media account will enter with their Turkish ID number. A verification code will be obtained via e-Devlet, and social media will be accessed with this. Accounts can still be created with a 'nickname,' but you will have to provide your Turkish ID number. Catalog crimes are defined. We have established these. These will be forwarded to the platform where the account is located, and if a crime has been committed, information will be requested."
