'Soğuk Savaş' host Boğaç Soydemir and guest Enes Akgündüz arrested
Boğaç Soydemir, host of the program 'Soğuk Savaş' (Cold War), and guest Enes Akgündüz have been arrested after being detained as part of an investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an ex officio investigation into the content of a video published on the YouTube channel "Soğuk Savaş" on charges of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility or insulting."
As part of the investigation, detention orders were issued for Boğaç Soydemir, host of the program "Gülersen Kaybedersin" (If You Laugh, You Lose), and guest Enes Akgündüz.
In a statement from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was noted that it was determined that a video content published on the "Soğuk Savaş" social media accounts and circulated on social platforms contained posts inciting the public and promoting hate speech regarding the Prophet Muhammad, based on the hadith "Alcohol is the mother of all evils."
Following this, an investigation was launched in accordance with Article 216/1 of the Turkish Penal Code.
The aforementioned article states, "A person who publicly incites a segment of the public, which has different characteristics in terms of social class, race, religion, sect, or region, to hatred and hostility against another segment, in a manner that creates a clear and imminent danger to public safety, shall be sentenced to imprisonment from one to three years."
In the "Gülersen Kaybedersin" program broadcast on the "Soğuk Savaş" YouTube channel, hosts and guests tell each other deadpan jokes. Most of these jokes consist of wordplay.
In the episode under investigation, Soydemir asks his guest Akgündüz, "What do you say to the person who says 'Alcohol is the mother of all evils'?"
Akgündüz replies that he does not know the answer, asking, "What do you say?" Upon this, Soydemir says the answer is, "So be it, I like MILFs, bro."
SOYDEMİR HAD APOLOGIZED
Before the detention order, Soydemir had apologized for the joke in a message shared on social media.
Soydemir had also announced that the relevant segment had been removed from the broadcast. In his message, Soydemir stated, "I would like to apologize to the people I offended with a joke I made in recent days. I absolutely had no such intention. I normally take care to be sensitive about the jokes I make myself. However, at that moment, we had moved on to jokes sent by viewers, and I read that joke for the first time right then. I thought it was a simple wordplay at the time, but I should have thought about it afterward. I realized it upon my friends' warnings. You are right. I apologize for this. We have removed the relevant part from the broadcast."
