Soldier tried in Balyoz case appointed as 'General' to lead cross-border operations
With a decree signed by AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, changes were made to the Land, Naval, and Air Force commands within the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK).
With the decree signed by Erdoğan and published in the Official Gazette, 187 generals and admirals were appointed across the Land, Naval, and Air Force commands.
With the decree signed by President Erdoğan, changes were made to the Land, Naval, and Air Force commands within the TSK. The decree resulted in the replacement of three army commanders and changes in four army commands.
Accordingly, the 1st Army Commander, 2nd Army Commander, and Aegean Army Commander were changed. One of the most significant changes in the decree concerned the border line.
Some of the commanders of military units along the Syrian, Iraqi, and Iranian border lines, as well as senior commanders involved in air operations across the country, were replaced.
Changes were also made to the commanders of combat units within the Naval Forces.
Metin Tokel, who is responsible for cross-border operations and was promoted to the rank of General last week, was appointed as the Commander of the 1st Army in Istanbul.
The management of cross-border operations was given to Levent Ergün, who was once tried and acquitted in the Balyoz case. Ergün, who replaced Tokel as the 2nd Army Commander, had also been promoted to the rank of General by the Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) decision last week.
One of the notable appointments in the decree was the change in the General Staff Intelligence Department.
With the decree, Deputy Chief of General Staff İrfan Özsert was appointed as the Aegean Army Commander, while General Kemal Yeni, whom he replaced, became the Deputy Chief of General Staff.
General Staff Intelligence Chief Lieutenant General İsmail Günaydın was appointed to the Air Logistics Command.
Air War Institute Director Lieutenant General Yaşar Kadıoğlu became the General Staff Intelligence Chief.
Thus, changes were also made to the staff of Metin Gürak, who was appointed as Chief of General Staff last year.
