Somalia motion approved

The Presidential motion regarding the deployment of Turkish Armed Forces elements in Somalia for a period of 2 years, including in Somalia's maritime jurisdiction areas and in regions to be jointly determined by the two countries, with rules to be exclusively established, in order to support Somalia's efforts to ensure its security against terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, all forms of smuggling, and other threats, has been approved by the TBMM General Assembly.

The Republican People's Party (CHP) and the DEM Party group voted against the motion.

The motion, which states that the Somali government has requested assistance, reads as follows:

"Through this cooperation to be carried out with Somalia, it will be ensured that Somalia's economic resources are secured, that stability and security are contributed to in a region of key importance for our foreign trade and maritime transport, that our friendship with Somalia is strengthened, and that our country's support for efforts against terrorism, piracy, and armed robbery in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and adjacent regions—which endanger international peace and stability and can also negatively affect our national interests—is consolidated.

With these considerations, in accordance with Article 92 of the Constitution, I submit for your information the request for authorization for a period of 2 years to deploy Turkish Armed Forces elements to support Somalia's activities to ensure its security against terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing, all forms of smuggling, and other threats, including in Somalia's maritime jurisdiction areas and in regions to be jointly determined by the two countries, with rules to be exclusively established, and to make the necessary arrangements regarding this according to principles to be determined by the President, in a manner consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2713 (2023) and our obligations arising from international law, and by utilizing opportunities for cooperation with third countries and international organizations when necessary, within the scope of the implementation of international agreements concluded between Somalia and our country, with the scope, extent, amount, and timing to be determined and designated by the President."
