Son of MHP official arrested for human smuggling with PKK members: 'The organization is using my child...'

Sözcü columnist İsmail Saymaz reported that Tunahan Adıgüzel, the son of Güven Adıgüzel—the owner of the building housing the MHP Istanbul Organization who had stated he had cut ties with politics some time ago—was caught smuggling migrants with PKK members.

'HE WAS PAYING A FEE PER CUSTOMER'

Saymaz described the incident as follows:

“On May 28, in Çanakkale, gendarmerie and coast guard teams took action following a drug tip-off. Six people—four Turks and two Greeks—were detained at the Kumbağlar Port in Ayvacık for allegedly smuggling migrants using a Greek-flagged speedboat named ‘Nefeli’. 11 kilograms and 900 grams of drugs were seized on the boat. Additionally, 10 suspects wanted for intentional killing, assault, PKK membership, and drug use, who were attempting to flee abroad, were captured.

Two vehicles used by suspects Tunahan Adıgüzel and Atakan Görevin for smuggling were confiscated. 2,500 dollars, 2,500 Euros, and 200 TL were found on Adıgüzel. Four Turks, including Adıgüzel and Görevin, and two Greeks were arrested for human smuggling; one of those caught on the boat was arrested for PKK membership, and another for drug use. An Iranian national was handed over to the Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services.

In his statement, Adıgüzel says he operates a hotel and restaurant in Sarıyer. He claims that a person named ‘Azat’ living in Greece called him from an international line and said, ‘You will take four people into your car and drive them 200 meters ahead.’ He explains that 60,000 TL was sent to his account in return. Adıgüzel states that he rented two cars for the migrant smuggling and took three of his friends with him. Stating that he met ‘Azat’ on the internet and had engaged in customer transactions two or three times, Adıgüzel said, ‘Azat sometimes paid a higher fee per customer. We did not meet with Azat in Turkey. We met on the internet.’”

'THEY ARE DECEIVING MY SON INTO DOING THIS'

Father Güven Adıgüzel, who owns the building housing the MHP Istanbul Organization and stated he had cut ties with politics some time ago, told Saymaz the following:

“My eldest son, Cihanay, was convicted of money laundering in Turkey and fled to Greece. He met PKK members in Athens. They are using the child to engage in human trafficking through my younger son, Tunahan. While they were trafficking humans, two Greek captains brought a package without their knowledge. They offered them money. My child’s friend took this package and threw it somewhere. Drugs were found in the package. When the gendarmerie raided, our people were caught.”

Adıgüzel, who said his eldest son Cihanay called him after the raid and stated that the PKK members were demanding 50,000 Euros due to the seized drugs, said, “They called and threatened me. I managed to rescue my child from the hands of the PKK members somehow. The organization is using and deceiving my eldest child to get this work done.”

NO DEATH BENEFIT PROVIDED TO ÜNYELİ'S FAMILY

In his column today, Saymaz also wrote that no death benefit was provided to the family of Lieutenant Colonel Gökhan Ünyeli, who was serving at the Signal Electronic Information Systems School and Training Center Command under the Land Forces Command Training and Doctrine Command and who committed suicide after being accused of FETÖ membership.

Saymaz said the following in the relevant section of his article:

“While the TSK (Turkish Armed Forces) should have apologized to the family of Ünyeli, who was put on trial with baseless allegations, it is withholding the death benefit. By putting itself in the place of the court, it is trying to portray Ünyeli as guilty. Those who retired Admiral Mehmet Sarı—who was pictured chanting dhikr in his uniform at a dervish lodge—with all his rights intact, are trampling on the honor of an Ataturkist lieutenant colonel who committed suicide because he was accused of FETÖ membership and are seizing his rights. Let the TSK Solidarity Foundation decide, who are they in solidarity with?”

'SO THAT MY PARTY DOES NOT SUFFER...'

Following the scandal detailed in journalist İsmail Saymaz's column, MHP Istanbul executive Güven Adıgüzel announced his resignation from his party.

In a statement on his social media account, Adıgüzel said, “I announce to the public that I am resigning with sadness so that my party, the MHP, does not suffer. Respectfully...”

The MHP official also said in his resignation statement, “The fact that the terrorist organization PKK is targeting and threatening me is, in my view, an absurd situation! What is truly sad is that I and my party, the MHP, are being targeted through my children. On this occasion, I express my sadness. With my respect and regards...”
