Southwesterly storm hits Istanbul: Boats sink, services canceled

The strong southwesterly storm, which has been effective across Istanbul since the morning hours, continues to negatively impact life in the city. Following warnings from the General Directorate of Meteorology, the wind increased in intensity, causing dangerous scenes, especially in coastal regions.

BOATS IN TUZLA COULD NOT WITHSTAND

On the Anatolian side, one of the points where the storm was felt most intensely was the Tuzla coast, where moored boats could not withstand the giant waves. In footage shared by Hava Forum, it was seen that the waves created by the storm damaged the boats, and some boats capsized and sank.

WAVES OVERFLOWED THE COAST

In the moments reflected in the shared footage, it was noted that the sea overflowed in places and boats hit concrete surfaces with harsh waves. While the boats were tossed uncontrollably due to the severe wind, citizens and boat owners in the region experienced difficult moments. Authorities reiterated their warnings to stay away from the coastline and to be cautious.

MARITIME TRANSPORT HALTED

Adverse weather conditions also affected maritime transport. Şehir Hatları AŞ, a subsidiary of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and Istanbul Sea Buses (İDO) announced that services were canceled due to the storm.

In a statement made on the website of Şehir Hatları AŞ, it was stated, "All our services will not be able to be operated until a second announcement due to unfavorable weather conditions."

A similar statement was made on the official website of İDO, reporting that external line services were canceled due to adverse weather conditions.

CABLE CAR SERVICES SUSPENDED

The effect of the storm was also felt in land transport. Metro Istanbul announced in a statement on its social media accounts that services could not be operated on cable car lines. The statement indicated that cable car operations were temporarily suspended due to severe wind and adverse weather.
