Southwesterly winds hit Istanbul

The strong southwesterly winds, which increased in intensity in Istanbul starting Friday evening, made life difficult in many parts of the city until Sunday. While giant waves were particularly noticeable along the coastline, the rising waves of the sea caused difficult moments for citizens in many coastal areas, especially in Üsküdar and Avcılar.

Due to the effect of the winds, the roof of a two-story building in the Yenidoğan neighborhood of the Gaziosmanpaşa district was torn off and scattered around. Pieces from the roof fell onto two parked vehicles, causing material damage to the cars. Fire department crews reached the area in a short time, took security measures at the scene, and carried out the necessary work on the roof.

Serious disruptions were observed in maritime transport across the city. According to the announcement made on the official website of Şehir Hatları, ferry services that were canceled on Friday could not be resumed the following day. Passengers were forced to use alternative methods of transportation.

The strong winds also led to the formation of giant waves on the coasts of Zeytinburnu, Kuruçeşme, and Bebek. People walking along the coastline and those wanting to fish had difficulty moving at times. Citizens were warned to be careful against the negative conditions caused by the southwesterly winds.

Authorities stated that the southwesterly winds would continue to be effective until the night hours and asked citizens to be cautious while in open areas and by the seaside.
