May 9, 1945, marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) against Nazi Germany. According to official figures, the Soviet people suffered more than 26 million casualties against the Nazis, who posed a grave threat to humanity.
In the struggle known as the Great Patriotic War, Nazi forces were halted in Stalingrad. Following the red flag being raised in Berlin, Nazi forces surrendered. Joseph Stalin, the leader of the USSR at the time, announced the victory in a radio address to the public.
With Stalin's address, World War II also effectively came to an end.
HITLER COMMITTED SUICIDE
Adolf Hitler, the head of Nazi Germany, ended his life in the Führerbunker where he was hiding in Berlin days before May 9. Hitler, who committed suicide on April 30, 1945, upon realizing he would be defeated, had his body burned in accordance with the order he gave out of fear that his lifeless body would fall into the hands of the Soviet army.
