Spain proposes mandatory masks in hospitals

In Spain, the government has proposed making mask-wearing mandatory in hospitals and health centers due to the surge in respiratory infection cases, particularly the flu, which has seen a significant increase in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, as the flu and Covid-19 spread rapidly across Europe, the Mediterranean country of Italy has warned that respiratory infection rates in the country have reached record levels.

According to a report by euronews, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has advised people to stay home if they feel ill and to wear masks in crowded places or healthcare settings.

The statement, which emphasizes that the elderly and those with chronic illnesses must strictly follow national guidelines regarding vaccination, noted that the flu is now being seen at higher levels than other common respiratory pathogens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19.

In some regions of Spain, local authorities had already instructed patients, visitors, and hospital staff to wear masks last week. The central government proposed on Monday that this practice be extended nationwide.

It was reported that a final decision on the matter, on which not all local governments are in agreement, will be made on Wednesday.
