In the İnönü neighborhood on Afşin Street, İsmail Bayam (32), who had escaped from prison where he was serving time for drug-related offenses, opened fire with a weapon on the police team conducting an operation on the house where he was located.

As a result of the gunfire, 2 police officers were wounded. Following the incident, a large number of police and medical teams, including special operations police, were dispatched to the area.

Police teams took extensive security measures around the house where the suspect was located.

OFFICER COULD NOT BE SAVED DESPITE ALL INTERVENTIONS

The teams neutralized the suspect as a result of the ensuing clash. During this time, the suspect's mother, who was in the house, was also brought out by police teams.

Ahmet Şahan (38), one of the wounded police officers who was taken to Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital, could not be saved despite the interventions. The treatment of the wounded police officer, Arif Ay, is ongoing.

Provincial Police Chief Kayhan Ay and Kastamonu Governor Meftun Dallı also arrived at the scene to receive information from the teams.

The suspect's body was taken to the morgue of Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital after the crime scene investigation teams completed their work.

STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE

In a written statement from the Kastamonu Governor's Office, it was stated that upon receiving a tip-off, teams from the Provincial Police Department's Anti-Narcotics Branch launched an operation to capture İsmail Bayam, who had escaped from the prison where he was being held for narcotics offenses.

The statement, which reported that an operation was carried out at the individual's residence in the city center at 9:30 AM, included the following: "During the operation, police officers Ahmet Şahan and Arif Ay were wounded as a result of fire opened from the house by the fugitive, and the wounded officers were immediately dispatched to Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital."

It was reported that police officer Ahmet Şahan, who was born in Nevşehir, was martyred despite the interventions, and the following was noted:

"As a result of the operation carried out by special operations teams at the scene, the fugitive's mother, whom he was holding hostage in the house, was brought out alive, and the fugitive İsmail Bayam was neutralized. We wish God's mercy upon our martyr who lost his life in the operation, and extend our condolences to his grieving family and our police force, and wish a speedy recovery to our wounded police officer."

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE FROM TBMM SPEAKER KURTULMUŞ

TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş published a condolence message for police officer Ahmet Şahan, who was martyred in Kastamonu.

In a post on his social media account, Kurtulmuş stated, "I wish God's mercy upon our heroic police officer Ahmet Şahan, who was martyred in Kastamonu, and extend my condolences to his relatives and our beloved nation. May he rest in peace."
