Speeding driver's vehicle to be auctioned

Strict traffic rules that came into effect in Austria on March 1, 2024, impose serious sanctions on speeding drivers. Under these rules, it has become possible to seize the vehicles of drivers who exceed the speed limit and to offer these vehicles for sale at auction. According to the new regulation, a vehicle seized for the first time is being put up for sale at auction.

According to the information obtained, the vehicle of a 17-year-old driver who exceeded the 100 km/h speed limit by 98 kilometers on the A1 Western Motorway near Vienna had been seized. The young driver's VW Passat is now being put up for auction to be sold.

According to the report in Son Haber, the driver, who came from near Salzburg, has the right to appeal, but authorities state that the chances of success are low. 

THE RULE ALSO APPLIES TO FOREIGN DRIVERS

According to the new traffic regulations, drivers who exceed the speed limit by 80 km/h in residential areas and 90 km/h in non-residential areas not only have to temporarily surrender their driver's licenses; their vehicles can also be seized and offered for sale at auction.

These rules apply to both local and foreign drivers. However, rental or leased vehicles cannot be auctioned due to third-party property rights. 

A similar practice exists in Denmark, where speeding vehicles can also be seized and auctioned off.
