Statement from Açık Radyo following license revocation
A statement has been issued by Açık Radyo, whose license was revoked by RTÜK on the grounds that it 'did not comply with a five-day program suspension penalty for inciting the public to hatred and hostility.'
The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has revoked the license of Açık Radyo, which it had previously issued a "program suspension and maximum administrative fine" against, citing statements made on the Açık Gazete program.
A statement regarding RTÜK's decision was shared on Açık Radyo's X account. The statement included the following remarks:
"Although it has not yet been formally served to us, it has been learned that at the meeting of the Radio and Television Supreme Council dated 03.07.2024, Açık Radyo's broadcasting license was revoked.
A request for installment payments was made for the fine issued alongside the broadcast suspension, as per the decision; this was accepted, and the first installment has been paid. Thus, it is clear that we have no intention of resisting the law or opposing this decision outside of legal channels, and that we are attempting to maintain a good-faith process.
At this point, reaching the stage of revoking Açık Radyo's broadcasting permit based on a statement in the Açık Gazete program—which is indisputably within the scope of freedom of expression and press freedom—is an unacceptable situation. Legal applications regarding the aforementioned decision will, of course, be made. Furthermore, Açık Radyo, which has been broadcasting for 30 years, will continue its broadcasting life with the same responsibility and in line with the same universal journalistic principles from here on out.
We will continue to be together with you, our dear listeners and friends who have always stood by us, with the same determination and the same feelings from now on as well."
