Statement from the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding Hüseyin Gün

On October 24, the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had launched an 'espionage' investigation into the CHP's imprisoned presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, TELE1 Editor-in-Chief Merdan Yanardağ, and İmamoğlu's advisor Necati Özkan.

Yanardağ was detained on the morning of the same day, and by the evening, a trustee had been appointed to TELE1 by the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF). Yesterday (October 25), it was reported that Yanardağ's detention period had been extended by 24 hours.

The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had previously announced that digital materials belonging to Hüseyin Gün, who was arrested on July 4 on charges of 'espionage,' were being examined. It was alleged that the examination revealed photographs of military ammunition and weapons of a type inaccessible to civilians or private companies.

Furthermore, it was claimed that passport photographs belonging to Israeli citizens, who were stated to be active in military or political fields in Israel, were also found among these materials.

Regarding the allegations concerning Gün, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office issued a new statement today (October 26):

“It has been understood that claims have been made in some media outlets stating that an investigation was previously conducted into the individual named Hüseyin Gün for FETÖ membership and that a decision of non-prosecution was issued; this information does not reflect the truth and is intended for disinformation.”
