Statement from İYİ Party's Kocamaz regarding fraud incident: 'Due to my illness and my trust in the state'
In a statement regarding being defrauded by individuals posing as police officers, İYİ Party Mersin Deputy Burhanettin Kocamaz explained that he was undergoing treatment for a flu infection at the time of the incident and was under the influence of medication, adding that his trust in the state was also exploited.
Making a statement following reports in social media and some news outlets, Kocamaz stated that he was resting at his home in Ankara on June 14 due to a flu infection.
Kocamaz noted that during this time, he was called by individuals who identified themselves as personnel from the Mersin Counter-Terrorism Branch, and that he believed them because the suspects provided detailed information regarding his bank accounts, title deed records, and personal data.
Explaining that he was directed by the individuals with whom he was in constant contact under the pretext of the confidentiality of an operation, Kocamaz said he handed over money and jewelry, thinking he was assisting state institutions. Stating that he became suspicious when no official documentation was provided during the handover, Kocamaz said he immediately contacted police authorities and applied to the Ankara Police Department.
Conveying that the suspects were caught and arrested in a short time as a result of the rapid work of the Ankara Police, Kocamaz thanked the police personnel who took part in the operation.
Emphasizing his illness in his statement, Kocamaz said, "I experienced this unpleasant incident due to the illness I was and am still going through, the effect of the medication I used for it, and my excessive trust in my state."
Kocamaz expressed his regret for having come to the public's attention in Turkey due to the incident, stating, "I have no account that I cannot give to anyone. All my sensitivity stems from the responsibility I bear toward my country and my state."
