Statement from the İzmir Governor's Office regarding the earthquake swarm: Volcanic activity, tsunami

The İzmir Governor's Office has issued a statement regarding the earthquake swarm observed in the Aegean Sea.

In the statement made by the Governor's Office, it was noted that more than 400 earthquakes, the largest of which was magnitude 4.8, have been recorded so far as part of the activity continuing in the form of an earthquake swarm in the region.

The statement, which reported that the earthquakes are concentrated approximately 25 kilometers northeast of Santorini Island, included the following remarks:

"The earthquakes are occurring at depths ranging between 5 and 25 kilometers. The earthquake closest to our country's coasts occurred at a distance of approximately 140 kilometers.

In this region, where similar seismic activity was experienced in the years 2011-2012, the activity that lasted for 14 months did not cause any volcanic activity. Experts are evaluating the seismic activity in a multi-faceted manner in coordination with AFAD. The possibilities of earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tsunamis are being monitored within a scientific framework.
