Statement from Lavrov regarding Syria
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia has made changes to its military arrangements in Syria, saying, "The issue is not just about protecting our bases or strongholds, but also about their operation, maintenance, and supply conditions, as well as interaction with the local party. These matters could be a subject of negotiation with Syria's new administration."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov evaluated the developments of 2024 in an interview with a state news agency.
Regarding the possibility of starting negotiations for a resolution to the Ukraine war next year, "The reality on the ground must be taken into account" he stated as his condition. What will happen to Russia's military bases in Syria is among the most curious topics. Lavrov said, "These matters could be a subject of negotiation with Syria's new administration" .
Lavrov used the following expressions:
"The deployment of Russian military bases in Syria is provided for by valid interstate agreements signed within the framework of international legal norms. Each of these defines the operating conditions for these facilities and contains specific obligations for both parties."
He stated that the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has brought about changes in Russia's military arrangements in the country. Although no official request has been made to review the agreements, Lavrov noted that the transition period announced by the interim Syrian government until March 1, 2025, imposes limitations on policy-making. Lavrov added, "The issue is not just about protecting our bases or strongholds, but also about their operation, maintenance, and supply conditions, as well as interaction with the local party. These matters could be a subject of negotiation with Syria's new administration."
