Statement from Naci Görür following the Pülümür earthquake: Warning of a magnitude 7+ earthquake...

Earthquake expert Naci Görür once again drew attention to the East Anatolian fault line following the earthquake that occurred in Pülümür on January 1. 

Görür stated, "This fault is ready to break and produce an earthquake above 7."

Calling on local governments to build earthquake-resistant, resilient cities, Görür emphasized that there is extreme compression and pressure accumulation in the region following the Maraş-centered earthquakes.

"WE ARE CONCERNED"

Speaking to NTV, Görür said the following:

"Tunceli is surrounded by faults on all four sides; there is the Ovacık, Malatya, East Anatolian, and Nazımiye fault. Nazımiye, Pülümür, and Tunceli are located between these faults... The last earthquake between Erzincan and Bingöl-Karlıova on the North Anatolian Fault was in 1784... The Yedisu Fault produces an earthquake every 250 years.

The recurrence period of the fault has expired, and the February 6 earthquakes may have transferred stress to the ends of these faults. Due to stress transfer, the earthquake that could occur on these faults may have been brought forward. That is why we are concerned."
