Statement from the International Court of Justice regarding Turkey

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has announced that Turkey has filed a declaration of intervention in the case brought by South Africa against Israel for alleged violations of the Genocide Convention.

In a written statement issued by the International Court of Justice, it was stated that Turkey has filed a declaration of intervention in the case brought by the Republic of South Africa against Israel within the framework of the 1948 United Nations (UN) Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

The statement noted that Turkey filed the declaration of intervention in accordance with Article 63 of the Court's Statute, which stipulates that "whenever the construction of a convention to which states other than those concerned in the case are parties is in question, the Registrar shall as soon as possible notify all such states forthwith. Every state so notified has the right to intervene in the proceedings."

The statement further conveyed that Turkey submitted declarations regarding the correct interpretation of Articles I, II, III, IV, V, and VI of the Genocide Convention, and that Turkey also included the phrase, "reserves the right to request permission to intervene under Article 62 of the Statute."

A delegation consisting of Turkey's Ambassador to The Hague Selçuk Ünal, AK Party Istanbul Deputy Prof. Dr. Cüneyt Yüksel, Chairman of the Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee and AK Party Istanbul Deputy İsmail Emrah Karayel, and Constitutional Commission Member and Denizli Deputy Cahit Özkan had submitted Turkey's declaration of intervention in the genocide case against Israel to the ICJ Registry today.

With this move, Turkey has become the seventh country to file a declaration of intervention in the genocide case between South Africa and Israel at the ICJ, following Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, and Spain.
