Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the US arms embargo decision
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement following the United States' (US) decision to extend the lifting of the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC).
In a written statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was emphasized that this would increase armament on the island, stating, "It has been announced that the US will extend for another year, as of October 1, 2024, its decision to lift the arms embargo on the GCASC, which it took in September 2020, expanded in scope in 2022, and extended in 2023.
We concur with the views expressed in the statement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) regarding this matter.
This grave error will increase armament on the island and damage the delicate balances in the region.
We believe that in the face of the increasing armament activities of the GCASC, the TRNC will take all necessary measures to enhance its defense and deterrence capabilities," the statement read.
