Statement from Ümit Karan regarding claims of his arrest
Former national football player Ümit Karan, who returned to the spotlight following claims of his arrest, has issued a statement regarding the reports circulating on social media.
Claims emerged that former national football player and sports commentator Ümit Karan had been arrested on charges of "simple sexual assault in the form of molestation" against a building attendant at his former residence.
Some sources alleged that after appearing at the Bakırköy Courthouse, Karan was arrested and transferred to Metris Prison.
However, Karan denied these reports, stating, "I am not under arrest," and added, "I completed my procedures at the courthouse regarding a case from 2015."
WHAT HAPPENED?
In 2015, a lawsuit was filed against Ümit Karan seeking up to 5 years in prison on charges of sexual assault against I.A., who worked at the apartment building where he resided.
At the conclusion of the trial, the Bakırköy 37th Criminal Court of First Instance acquitted Karan due to insufficient evidence. However, this decision was overturned by the 20th Criminal Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice, and Karan was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison.
The 9th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation subsequently upheld the local court's decision, finalizing the sentence.
