Statement on minimum wage from DİSK

The minimum wage marathon begins tomorrow with the first meeting of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission. In a statement issued by the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK), it was stated that the minimum wage should be at least around half of the poverty line.

Publishing a comprehensive report on the subject, DİSK emphasized that living conditions must be taken into account when determining the minimum wage. Stating that the poverty line should be considered as a criterion for minimum wage increases, DİSK demanded that the minimum wage be at least around half of the poverty line, based on the assumption of two earners in a household.

According to the latest research by Türk-İş, the poverty line in November was set at 66 thousand 976. Calculated based on this data, DİSK's demand points to approximately 33 thousand 500 TL.

The confederation stated that the minimum wage should also be determined jointly for all workers and civil servants. Noting that as of November 2024, the lowest civil servant salary was 39 thousand TL and the lowest gross base wage for public workers was around 41 thousand TL (approximately 33 thousand TL net), DİSK expressed that the minimum wage should be calculated by taking into account at least the public worker wage and the lowest civil servant salary.

DİSK stated that the minimum wage should be re-determined within the year in an environment of high inflation.

Demands regarding taxes also stood out in DİSK's list. Accordingly, the confederation said that in addition to the tax exemption and support to be provided for the minimum wage, the rate applied to the first tax bracket after the minimum wage should be reduced to 10 percent.

Stating that the minimum wage tax exemption should be applied through a deduction from the tax base rather than from the tax itself, DİSK demanded that the 5-point premium support applied to employers also be applied to employees.

DİSK also said that the stamp duty should be abolished to increase the income of employees.
