Statement on mpox virus from Istanbul Provincial Health Director

Istanbul Provincial Health Director Abdullah Emre Güner announced that there are no cases of mpox in the city so far. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Güner drew attention to the importance of following official statements for accurate information on such health issues.

Touching on the significant differences between mpox and COVID-19, Güner stated the following:

“We currently have no mpox cases in Istanbul. The only way we can prevent disinformation during this period is by following official statements. There is a huge difference between mpox and COVID. One is a disease transmitted through prolonged contact, while COVID is a disease transmitted through the respiratory tract. Therefore, it is a disease with a low transmission rate. Our citizens should rest assured; our health system is strong enough to combat infectious diseases at every point in any situation."

WE NEED TO BE AWARE

Furthermore, Güner drew attention to diseases transmitted through animals, such as the West Nile virus. Stating that citizens need to act consciously, Güner concluded his words as follows:

“Along with this, there are infectious diseases whose names we cannot even count. You need to become aware in order to follow all of these. Because it is normal to fear what we do not know. Without being anxious about any matter, our Ministry's information pages and information guides should be followed. Our Ministry provides information when there is a problematic situation. There is no problem at the moment, and we do not have any expectations of a pandemic-related outbreak."
