Statement on the potential Marmara earthquake from Cenk Yaltırak! 'According to our calculations...'
Following consecutive earthquakes measuring 5.1 and 4.5 in the Sea of Marmara – Gulf of Gemlik, Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Cenk Yaltırak has issued a statement.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sea of Marmara – Gulf of Gemlik.
The earthquake, which caused brief panic, was felt primarily in Istanbul, as well as in Balıkesir, Eskişehir, Bilecik, Bursa, İzmir, Tekirdağ, Kocaeli, Kütahya, and many other provinces. Meanwhile, another earthquake measuring 4.5 was recorded in the same location at 10:45.
STATEMENT FROM CENK YALTIRAK
Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Cenk Yaltırak made statements regarding the potential major Marmara earthquake expected to occur in the Marmara region.
Yaltırak stated, "There are calculated earthquake magnitudes for the Marmara. There are 4 segments in the Marmara. These have the potential to produce four major earthquakes between 7 and 7.6."
In his statement to Habertürk, Yaltırak explained, "Just like in Kahramanmaraş, it is within the realm of possibility that 2 or 3 of them could break at the same time."
