Statement on trustees from Özgür Özel! 'Seizing municipalities they couldn't win in the election...'

Following the Esenyurt Municipality in Istanbul, the AKP government today appointed trustees to the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, the Batman Municipality, and the Şanlıurfa Halfeti Municipality.

Following these trustee appointments, the Mardin Governor's Office announced that a 10-day ban on demonstrations and events has been declared across the province.

As reactions to the appointments grow rapidly, Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel also issued a statement, harshly criticizing the appointments.

In his statement on his X social media account, Özel used the following expressions:

"This morning, a trustee was appointed to two more elected mayors, including Ahmet Türk, one of the most important names in political dialogue who first comes to mind when peace is mentioned in Turkey.

Without learning any lessons from what has been happening for days,

Without paying any heed to what is being said,

Seizing the municipalities they could not win in the election,

Daring to remove politicians they cannot reform from office through a coup,

We are dealing with a shameless, brazen arrogance, with a twisted mind, a wicked heart, and dirty hands."

Özgür Özel, with this statement, criticized the AKP government's practice of appointing trustees to municipalities, describing the removal of elected mayors from office as a "blow to dialogue and democracy." Emphasizing that the removal of a figure like Ahmet Türk, who has become a symbol of the search for peace and dialogue, is a major mistake, Özel condemned the government's oppressive policies toward political will.
