Statement regarding police officer who died by suicide after being assigned to Diyarbakır: Reaction from CHP minister

Murat Bakan, who announced that a police officer serving in Istanbul had died by suicide, shared the officer's letter on his social media account and stated the following:

"Another police officer has died by suicide! While burning agendas are being discussed across the country, amid unlawful operations against municipalities, the arrest of journalists, the Kurdish issue, and covert negotiations conducted under the name of peace, another life has quietly slipped away. Another cry that no one saw, heard, or felt has echoed.

A police officer serving in Istanbul... He was in the process of a divorce. He was experiencing psychological difficulties. He had two children. He was meeting with his children on specific days. While the court process was ongoing, he was assigned to Diyarbakır. He made a humanitarian request with a petition: 'I cannot see my children, I will suffer financial and moral collapse, please stop my assignment until the court concludes.' However, this request was not taken into account. His connection was severed. He was forced to go. And the result: Suicide.

He left behind a heartbreaking letter and two orphaned children. He stated clearly: 'The only thing that brought me to this state is the Security Directorate. Even if I had psychological problems, I stated in my petition that I did not want to go to Diyarbakır in this state. You carried out the assignment process without listening to any of my problems. I do not forgive you.'

I have been shouting for years: 'Why are police officers dying by suicide?' Because they are alone. Because they are not seen. Because they are not treated as human beings. Because... The police are alone. The police are destitute. The police are vulnerable.

I ask clearly here: Mr. Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya, are you aware of this burden? Mr. General Director of Security Mahmut Demirtaş, which suicide is this? Where are your psychological support units? Why are you ignoring humanitarian requests? This police officer did not commit suicide; he was driven to it. He was punished for making a humane request. And now he is gone.

We will continue to defend the rights, dignity, and lives of this country's police officers. Enough is enough! Stop police suicides. Let justice be served in the security organization. Human life is more valuable than bureaucratic procedures, statistics, penalty points, or assignment orders."

STATEMENT FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF SECURITY

A statement has come from the General Directorate of Security regarding the police suicide. The statement indicated that the police officer who died by suicide had previously requested the postponement of his assignment many times.

GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF SECURITY

Regarding the news reports in some media outlets today about our Police Officer M.S., who was serving in the Istanbul Security Directorate, dying by suicide, the following explanations have been deemed necessary.

The suicide of our Police Officer M.S. has deeply saddened our organization. While our Police Officer was serving under the Istanbul Security Directorate, he was assigned to Diyarbakır during the 2025 General Assignment Period.

Our personnel had served in the province of Istanbul for (14) years and (3) months, and had requested the postponement of his assignment 10 times until 2025. This request was accepted, and thus his assignment was postponed 10 times.

Following the 2025 assignments, our Police Officer requested a postponement of his assignment from the Istanbul Security Directorate for the 11th time. This postponement request was not accepted as it was the 11th time.

Due to our personnel's assignment to the province of Diyarbakır, his connection with the Istanbul Security Directorate was severed on 27.06.2025, and it is understood that he was currently on leave for travel.

We express our deepest condolences for this tragic incident and pray for God's mercy upon our personnel. A police inspector has been assigned to the matter.
