Statement released regarding world-famous streamer Speed's Galata Tower video

A video by world-famous streamer Speed, in which he was unable to find English-speaking staff at the Galata Tower to provide historical information, has sparked a major debate on social media. Following the footage, the Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM) issued a statement to inform the public.

"COMMENTS ARE MISLEADING, STAFF ARE SECURITY GUARDS"

The DMM emphasized that the comments shared by some social media accounts and news sources are misleading. The statement clarified that the individuals in the footage are security guards, and their primary duty is not to provide historical information, but to ensure visitor safety and provide guidance support.

The statement noted that the Galata Tower is visited by hundreds of thousands of domestic and foreign tourists every year, and that detailed information about the structure can be easily accessed through staff providing guidance services in different languages and digital systems supported by QR codes.

The statement included the following:

"Comments and claims appearing in some media outlets and on social media regarding a video filmed at the Galata Tower are misleading to the public. The individuals in the footage are security guards; their duty is to ensure visitor safety and provide guidance support. Conveying historical information is not the responsibility of this staff. Negative perceptions created based on footage from only a specific moment do not reflect the truth. It is clear that such content targets our cultural and touristic values. We invite the public to be cautious against misleading content and to rely on accurate and verified information."

WHAT HAPPENED?

World-famous streamer Darren Jason Watkins Jr., known as 'Speed' or 'IShowSpeed', looked for an English-speaking staff member at the Galata Tower to get information.

 The phenomenon, known for streaming games like FIFA and Fortnite and for his admiration for Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, came to Istanbul. The moments when the phenomenon went to visit the Galata Tower became a trending topic on social media.

After greeting the staff upon entering the tower, Speed asked about the history of the venue. The 20-year-old streamer, surprised that the staff tried to communicate with the help of a translation program, attempted to understand them. 

The YouTuber, unable to communicate with the staff, could not hide his surprise. Later, as Speed went to the top of the tower, a woman accompanying him on his trip who spoke English provided him with information.
