Striking details in the whistleblower letter: İsmail Saymaz writes about Dilan Polat and Engin Polat's fake invoice scheme

Sözcü columnist İsmail Saymaz drew attention to certain details in the statements of the couple Engin Polat and Dilan Polat, who were arrested in an investigation launched for money laundering, illegal betting, forgery of documents, establishing an organization for the purpose of committing crimes, and violating tax laws, as well as details from a whistleblower letter written about them.

Here are the relevant sections from Saymaz's article titled “The Polats' fake invoice scheme”:

FAKE INVOICE CORRESPONDENCE AND DOCUMENTS FOUND ON SILA DOĞU'S PHONE

“In court, Polat only admitted to a ‘tax error,’ stating: ‘We are a family company, not an organization. We may have made a tax-related error. There may be problematic invoices; there have been in the past. We have received the materials for every invoice. We did not provide fake invoices to anyone.’

However… it is stated that on the phone of Polat's sister-in-law, Sıla Doğu, there are correspondences and documents regarding the procurement of fake invoices in exchange for a commission from more than one person.”

WHISTLEBLOWER LETTER: ALLEGATION THAT POLAT CONDUCTED BETTING BUSINESS WITH VEYSEL ŞAHİN AND DERKAN BAŞER

“According to Engin Polat's statement taken at the prosecutor's office on November 3, an unnamed complainant testified against him. The complainant says the following about Polat: ‘He is a person who has a history of fake invoices and check fraud. Until six years ago, he worked as a taxi driver and a shop assistant. Under the guise of so-called trade, they issue high-amount invoices and generate income by laundering betting money obtained from Veysel Şahin and Halil Falyalı.’”

“Furthermore, in a tip-off received by the Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it is alleged that Polat conducted betting business with Veysel Şahin and Derkan Başer. It is claimed that the money went to Engin Polat's companies via mail-order, the withdrawn money was deposited into a currency exchange office in Bakırköy, collected by Veysel's brother Murat Şahin, and distributed in a triangle between the TRNC, Montenegro, and Georgia. Is it true? Polat claims he does not know Şahin and Başer… that he has no connection to illegal betting… and that he does not know about the ‘mail-order’ business.”
