Striking figure regarding Turkish expatriates revealed! Only 25 thousand applied...

Following the new dual citizenship regulation that came into effect in Germany, the fact that Turks in Germany are not turning toward Turkish citizenship has sparked debates on the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM). While expectations were for 500 thousand applications, the announced figure remained far below expectations.

According to a report by Cumhuriyet, in a presentation made at the Turkish Grand National Assembly, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate General for Consular Affairs and Citizens Living Abroad reported that only 25 thousand 387 people had applied for dual citizenship.

‘A BIG FIASCO’

CHP Eskişehir Deputy and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee Utku Çakırözer expressed that the figures reveal the "AKP's failure," stating, "The fact that only 25 thousand people out of our potential citizens, our brothers and sisters, have applied is a failure in itself. No matter how you look at it, there is a big fiasco here. It is precisely the duty of this committee and the Parliament to put the reasons for this on the table. There are hesitations, anxiety, and fear in people's minds."

‘IT IS A SORROW FOR ALL OF US’

Çakırözer stated that the lack of interest in dual citizenship among Turks, especially in Germany, despite the legal opportunity, should be investigated.

"The fact that this has not been brought to Parliament or discussed despite our persistent demands until today is unfortunately a shortcoming of those sitting in the seat of power. How many people from those in power or from the Foreign Affairs Committee have called out to our citizens and asked, 'What are the problems? Tell us,' regarding our citizens' lack of interest in dual citizenship? None! The reasons for this should be investigated. If only 25 thousand people choose citizenship while this law is in effect and they have the right in their hands, this is a problem. Our citizens should benefit from this; otherwise, this is a sorrow for all of us."
