Striking requirement in municipal police recruitment: Special quota for theology graduates
It has emerged that AKP-run municipalities have been allocating special quotas for "theology" graduates in their municipal police recruitment advertisements. In job postings by the Sultanbeyli, Fatih, Sancaktepe, and Meram municipalities, it is notable that theology graduates are eligible to apply alongside those from departments such as food technology and local administration.
The new municipal police recruitment advertisement issued by the AKP-run Sultanbeyli Municipality in Istanbul has drawn public attention. While the advertisement published by the municipality states that candidates must be graduates of at least an associate degree program, "theology" was included alongside departments such as food quality control, local administration, and food technology.
According to a report by Mert Öner from Cumhuriyet, it is not only the Sultanbeyli Municipality that has done this; many other AKP-run municipalities have previously opened special quotas for theology graduates with similar advertisements.
SIMILAR PRACTICES IN MANY MUNICIPALITIES
The Sultanbeyli Municipality's advertisement has brought the trend of AKP-run municipalities allocating special quotas for "theology" graduates in municipal police recruitment back to the agenda. Many municipalities have issued similar advertisements before:
Samsun Metropolitan Municipality: In a municipal police recruitment advertisement issued in 2021, it required candidates to be graduates of Arabic language teaching, Arabic translation and interpretation, or a faculty of theology.
Sancaktepe Municipality: In an advertisement issued in 2023, it allocated 28 quotas for theology graduates and 18 for Islamic studies graduates.
Fatih Municipality: In an advertisement published at the beginning of 2024, it opened 10 municipal police quotas for graduates of theology and Islamic studies.
Konya Meram Municipality: As of 2024, it issued an advertisement for 10 municipal police quotas for which theology graduates could also apply.
