Striking results in Life Satisfaction survey: One in every 2 people is unhappy

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced the findings of its 2023 Life Satisfaction Survey.

ONE IN EVERY 2 PEOPLE IS UNHAPPY

According to the results of the life satisfaction survey, the proportion of individuals aged 18 and over who declared they were happy was 49.7% in 2022, increasing by 3.0 points to 52.7% in 2023. The proportion of individuals who declared they were unhappy was 15.9% in 2022, decreasing by 2.2 points to 13.7% in 2023.

WOMEN ARE HAPPIER THAN MEN

The proportion of men who declared they were happy was 46.5% in 2022, rising to 50.3% in 2023. For women, this rate was 52.7% in 2022 and rose to 55.1% in 2023.

MARRIED PEOPLE ARE HAPPIER

It was observed that married individuals are happier than those who are not married. The proportion of married individuals who stated they were happy was 56.4% in 2023, while this rate was 45.8% for those who were not married. When the happiness level of married individuals is examined by gender, it was observed that 53.2% of married men and 59.5% of married women are happy.

YOUNG PEOPLE ARE HAPPIER

When the level of happiness is examined by age group, the happiness rate in the 18-24 age group was 47.9% in 2022, increasing by 6.1 points to 54.0% in 2023.

It was observed that the happiness rate decreased among individuals aged 55 and over. The happiness rate in the 55-64 age group was estimated at 49.7%, a decrease of 2.8 points compared to the previous year. For individuals aged 65 and over, it was 57.7% in 2022, decreasing by 1.7 points to 56.0% in 2023.

CITIZENS SAID 'HEALTH FIRST'

When the values that are sources of happiness for individuals are examined, the proportion of those who stated that being healthy makes them the happiest was 69.5% in 2023, followed by love at 13.2%, success at 9.2%, money at 5.3%, and work at 2.6%.

LIFE SATISFACTION REMAINS 'IN BETWEEN'

In order to calculate the level of life satisfaction individuals feel when considering their lives as a whole, an average was calculated by taking a value between "0" for those who are not satisfied at all and "10" for those who are very satisfied. While the average life satisfaction level of individuals was calculated as 5.5 in 2022, it became 5.7 in 2023 with an increase of 0.2 points. The average life satisfaction level was 5.6 for men and 5.8 for women in 2023.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEM FOR ONE IN EVERY 3 PEOPLE IS THE COST OF LIVING

When the country's most important problem is examined, unemployment ranked first with 18.5% in 2020, cost of living ranked second with 17.3%, and education ranked third with 17.2%. In 2023, the cost of living ranked first with 33.8%, while education ranked second with 16.5% and poverty ranked third with 13.4%.
