Striking statements from grieving wife in İliç disaster: 'They offered hush money'

Gamze Yıldız, the wife of Uğur Yıldız, who lost his life in the mining disaster that occurred in the İliç district of Erzincan on February 13, 2024, made significant statements regarding the disaster. Yıldız stated that they were offered financial compensation but did not accept it, emphasizing that those responsible must be held accountable.

Expressing that the authorities are trying to cover up the incident, Yıldız voiced her reaction with the following words:

"For us, there is no such thing as life anymore. During this process, they offered us money as 'hush money,' but we did not accept it. No one from the authorized company has been arrested. What happened here is not a work accident; it is a murder committed in plain sight. We will take this matter all the way to the international court. This incident must not be covered up."

"MY LIFE HAS BEEN TURNED UPSIDE DOWN"

Stating that her husband had dreams but that all her hopes were destroyed with the disaster, Gamze Yıldız expressed her disappointment following the expert report and stated the following. 

"We are as you left us. When the expert report was released, we experienced a great disappointment. Murat Kurum being found innocent, the authorities remaining silent by calling it 'fate'... I was married to my husband for only 1.5 years. He was always thinking about getting his severance pay and leaving, but my life was turned upside down by that disaster. I cannot even go to the home I set up with such great enthusiasm."

FIRST HEARING ON MARCH 17 

In the indictment prepared within the scope of the investigation conducted by the İliç Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that 12 of the 43 defendants were primarily at fault and 31 were secondary at fault, and a prison sentence of 2 to 15 years was requested for all defendants for the crime of "causing death and injury by negligence."
