Striking 'Super Cup' proposal from Ekrem İmamoğlu following cancellation decision
The Super Cup match planned between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, turned into a crisis after authorities did not permit an Atatürk banner. Following the cancellation decision, a notable 'Super Cup' proposal came from IMM Mayor İmamoğlu.
As the Super Cup match was postponed, IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu made a notable suggestion via his social media account.
Tagging Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, he stated the following:
"LET THE CUP BE SPLIT IN TWO"
"What has been experienced in a foreign country regarding the spiritual memory of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, has deeply saddened our nation.
However, our two distinguished clubs have stood up for Atatürk on behalf of our nation and done what was necessary. This match has now come to represent not a rivalry, but our national unity.
To make this meaningful stance permanent, I have a proposal for both communities and their executives: This final has no loser, it has 2 winners.
The 2023 Super Cup should be split in two and displayed in the museums of both clubs as a symbol of eternal rivalry, friendship, and our infinite devotion to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
This stance will always be meaningful in the hearts of our nation."
