Doruk Dörücü, who graduated from the Boğaziçi University Department of Sociology with 'high honors', had carried out a notable protest during his graduation ceremony on March 19, 2025, to express his reaction to the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the cancellation of his diploma. Dörücü, who tore up the diploma he held in his hand on stage during the ceremony, had become a subject of public discussion with his action.
In his statement at the ceremony, Dörücü had expressed his reaction with the words, "The diploma granted to me by this despotic regime, which cancels the diploma of the future president and opens, closes, or divides faculties as it pleases, is null and void."
DETAINED IN A DAWN RAID
Approximately three months after the incident, on the morning of Friday, July 4, a police operation was conducted on Dörücü's home in Istanbul. Dörücü was detained in the morning hours.
His lawyer, Mehmet Can Seyhan, stated in a post on his social media account, "Our friend Doruk Dörücü was detained in a dawn raid for the crime of tearing up his own diploma."
