Successive earthquakes in Amasya: Osman Bektaş warns against 'major earthquake' conclusions

Earthquakes occurring one after another in the Göynücek district of Amasya have drawn attention in the region.

Tremors of 3.0, followed by 2.3 and 2.7 in magnitude, were recorded in the district; later, another earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 occurred.

Evaluating the seismic activity on his social media account, Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş noted that according to Kandilli Observatory data, the latest tremor was measured at approximately magnitude 4.

Bektaş stated that the successive earthquakes suggest that a small fault segment in the region may have been activated.

However, he emphasized that one cannot directly conclude from this picture that a larger earthquake is expected.

According to Bektaş, the distribution of aftershocks that may occur in the coming days will be important.

The expert noted that the main issue to be monitored is the direction and depth at which the aftershocks will align.
