Supreme Court presidency election turns into a saga: 19th round to be held tomorrow

As the election marathon in the high judiciary continues, the Supreme Court presidency elections have once again failed to produce a result.

The 4-year term of Mehmet Akarca, who was elected to the post of Supreme Court President on March 24, 2020, expired as of March 24.

In this context, Supreme Court members went to the polls on Monday, March 25, to determine the new president of the High Court, who will serve for 4 years.

NO RESULT IN THE FIRST 17 ROUNDS

Following the failure of any candidate to receive at least 175 votes, which is the absolute majority of the 348 Supreme Court members, in the first 17 rounds of the election, the 18th round of voting was held today.

As a result of the voting, Mehmet Akarca received 104 votes, 3rd Civil Chamber President Ömer Kerkez received 113 votes, and 3rd Criminal Chamber President Muhsin Şentürk received 100 votes.

19TH ROUND TOMORROW

Due to the failure to secure an absolute majority, the election will continue tomorrow with the 19th round of voting.

An absolute majority of the total number of members is required to be present for the elections.
