Sword oath of newly graduated lieutenants sparks controversy: Trolls target them

The Diploma Awarding and Flag Handover Ceremony was held at the National Defense University (MSÜ) Military Academy. At the ceremony, Lieutenant Ebru Eroğlu, the top graduate of the class, received her diploma from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

As is customary at the ceremonies held every year on August 30 Victory Day, the young lieutenants experienced the excitement of becoming the new commanders of the Turkish army with their swords.

An image that emerged during the ceremonies sparked a debate on social media. The fact that the young lieutenants raised their swords, chanted the slogan "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal," and then repeated the oath read by the top graduate, Ebru Eroğlu, revealed two different views on social media.

While some social media accounts known for their closeness to the AKP commented that it was a "dangerous image" by recalling the coups Turkey has experienced in the past, another segment expressed that they were proud of what the young lieutenants did.

MILITARY ACADEMY TRADITION

It is a long-standing tradition at the Military Academy for newly graduated lieutenants to take an oath by crossing their swords under the supervision of the top graduate during graduation ceremonies.
