Tanju Özcan reacts to Minister Ersoy for skipping committee: 'Someone is trying to cover this up'
CHP Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan reacted to Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy's failure to attend the Turkish Parliament's Bolu Kartalkaya Hotel Fire Committee, stating, "I am not afraid; I will come and give my testimony to the nation's representatives. Those who are in the right are brave. Someone is trying to cover this issue up. We are persistently continuing to pursue this matter."
Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan attended the "Come, Choose, Make History" primary election meeting held at the CHP Headquarters.
Özcan made statements to journalists before the meeting. Speaking about the primary election, Özcan said, "I hope this will be the first day of a beautiful beginning for our party. We came to this meeting with excitement and participated. We will also discuss important things inside."
Beykoz Mayor Alaattin Köseler being detained in a dawn raid, Özcan noted the following:
"Unfortunately, we have gotten used to it; we open the internet every morning with anxiety. Who did they take this morning? Will our door be knocked on around 4-5 in the morning? We are working with our lives on the line, so to speak. There is a lynching campaign against our party by the government. We get the message they want to send, but we are not afraid. If those who do these things think they are scaring us, they are not smart people."
Speaking about the hotel fire at the Bolu Kartalkaya Ski Center, where 78 citizens lost their lives, Özcan reacted to Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy not attending the Turkish Parliament's Bolu Kartalkaya Hotel Fire Committee.
Özcan spoke as follows:
"As soon as the committee was established, it was published in the Official Gazette. I addressed the committee chair, saying, 'This incident happened within the borders of Bolu province, and my name has been mentioned frequently. I want to share my knowledge regarding this issue. I want to inform you about what kind of legislative changes should be made to prevent such incidents in the future.
Furthermore, I want to answer every question our committee members ask with transparency. Please invite me,' I said. I applied on the first day. Yesterday, the honorable Minister of Tourism could not come to the committee to give testimony, and I said, 'Do not confuse me with the Minister of Tourism; I am not afraid, I will come and give my testimony to the nation's representatives.' Those who are in the right are brave.
Someone is trying to cover this issue up. We are persistently continuing to pursue this matter. When you look at it from an administrative perspective, the Ministry of Tourism has a serious fault here. We are not going to ignore this. We will pursue this matter to the end."
