Tayfun Kahraman's wife, Meriç Demir Kahraman, makes an appeal to Erdoğan

Meriç Demir Kahraman, the wife of Tayfun Kahraman—who was sentenced to 18 years in prison as part of the Gezi Park trial and is currently held at the Marmara Prison in Silivri—has shared a striking video on her social media account.

In the video shared by Meriç Demir Kahraman, statements made by her husband Tayfun Kahraman following his meetings with the government during the Gezi protests are featured alongside speeches by Erdoğan.

HE STRIVED TO PREVENT IT FROM TURNING INTO VIOLENCE

Stating that her husband made efforts to ensure the Gezi protests did not turn into violence, Meriç Demir Kahraman said, “Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met directly with Tayfun. The government was in constant contact with my husband during the Gezi protests. Tayfun also attended the meeting held with Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç. My husband exerted effort up to the government officials of the time to ensure the Gezi protests did not turn into violence.”

The video includes a statement made by Tayfun Kahraman in 2013 following his meeting with the then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Meriç Demir Kahraman used the following expressions:

“We have expressed our assessments, which we have been stating for days, to the Prime Minister again today. They conveyed to us that they would wait for the outcome of the judicial process and then wanted to go to a public referendum. Mr. Prime Minister stated that if the preference was for it to remain a park as a result of the vote, they would abide by this decision if our citizens, the people of Istanbul, preferred this area to remain a park area.”

“HE WAS PART OF THE DELEGATION”

Reminding that Tayfun Kahraman took legal action to prevent Gezi Park from being opened to construction, Meriç Demir Kahraman continued, “He both took legal action to prevent Gezi Park, which is an earthquake assembly area, from being opened to construction as part of his constitutional and public duty as the President of the TMMOB Chamber of City Planners Istanbul Branch, and he was part of the delegation formed by the Prime Minister's choice that met with him to try to calm the events.”

Emphasizing that her husband was sentenced to 18 years in prison as a result of an indictment prepared by FETÖ-affiliated prosecutors and police officers who tried to create chaos from the peaceful protests in Gezi, Meriç Demir Kahraman appealed to the public:

“I ask: Who is committing this injustice, why, what are they gaining from it, and what is our country losing? Please, I beg everyone to examine the Gezi trial file so that this mistake can be corrected. We do not want to be a part of this dirty game played by groups within the judiciary over innocent people at the cost of creating a state crisis. We believe that we can ensure justice, which is the foundation of the state, through the institutions of our republic, which has reached its 100th year, with the deep conscience and wisdom of these lands, and with common sense and collective reason, just as we did in 2013.”

SHE ADDED A NOTE TO THE POST: THIS MORNING WE ASK EVERYONE TO SPARE 4 MINUTES

Meriç Demir Kahraman added the following note to the video she shared: “This morning, we ask everyone to spare 4 minutes to refresh their memory and remember who Tayfun Kahraman is. He was tried on the allegation of 'Attempting to Overthrow the Government by Force and Violence' and was sentenced to 18 years in prison without a single piece of evidence against him. The fact that he was part of the delegation that met with the then-Prime Minister Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and worked for a solution was ignored. We ask; who is committing this injustice, why, what are they gaining, and what is our country losing?”
