CHOCOLATE EXPENDITURE SPARKS DEBATE

While demands for savings in the public sector are rising, the luxury expenditures of TCDD and its subsidiary TCDD Teknik Mühendislik ve Müşavirlik A.Ş. have drawn attention. According to the report by Deniz Ayhan from Sözcü, the institution spent 1 million 709 thousand TL on chocolate purchases alone between April 2024 and June 2025.

According to official records, 460 thousand 600 TL was paid for 980 chocolates procured from the Liva brand, and 434 thousand 750 TL was paid for 925 chocolates also purchased from Liva. The bill for 870 boxes of madlen chocolate ordered from Divan amounted to 443 thousand 700 TL.

TCDD, which is the sole authority in rail transport, has been unable to cover its losses despite frequently increasing train ticket prices. The institution suffered losses of 6.4 billion liras in 2022, 11.4 billion in 2023, and 36.6 billion in 2024. Thus, the total loss over 22 years has exceeded 84 billion liras.
