Teachers end hunger strike
The hunger strike, which had been ongoing for 13 days at the Ankara Branch of the Private Sector Teachers' Union by private sector teachers and teachers affected by the interview process, has come to an end.
In a statement made in front of the branch, attention was drawn to the circular issued by the Ankara Governorship within the scope of the NATO Summit, and it was stated that constitutional and democratic rights were being restricted.
The statement said, "We are acting responsibly in the face of the lives of our friends and families and the negative situations they may face; we are responding to the calls of the public and our intellectual, academic, and artist friends who represent the public; we are pausing our resistance in Ankara and ending our hunger strike. Our struggle will continue in different forms in the provinces with great motivation and energy."
The union stated that the struggle, which began on June 1, moved to the stage of resistance on June 14 and to a hunger strike on June 15, noting that throughout the process, their demands became more visible to society and the problems in the field of education were discussed by wider segments of the public.
The statement expressed that the teachers' demands aimed not only to improve working conditions but also to solve structural problems in the field of education. The statement, which alleged that the government had not produced solutions to the demands, called on Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, members of the TBMM National Education Commission, and relevant political actors to take steps toward a solution.
The statement indicated that the struggle would continue in different cities across the country until mid-July, and it was reported that if no solution is reached during this process, the actions would be moved back to Ankara.
