Tension at CHP İstanbul provincial headquarters: Police violence against a young man resisting 'absolute nullity' supporters
Tensions flared at the CHP İstanbul Provincial Headquarters when an attempt was made to remove the poster of Ekrem İmamoğlu and replace it with one of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who returned to office following a court ruling. It is alleged that party member Ömer Faruk Aslan, who objected to the situation, was assaulted by security branch police officers; 12punto has obtained the assault report.
Tense moments occurred yesterday evening at the Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Headquarters. A giant vinyl poster of the party's presidential candidate, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was taken down, and an attempt was made to hang a poster of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who was returned to the head of the party by a court decision, in its place.
A scuffle broke out between security forces and party members who did not want to allow the change and were defending İmamoğlu.
12PUNTO HAS OBTAINED THE ASSAULT REPORT
It was learned that a young party member named Ömer Faruk Aslan, who opposed the poster change, was assaulted and subjected to violence by security branch police officers during the intervention.
The general forensic examination report obtained by 12punto and the footage taken after the incident revealed the extent of the violence applied.
According to the forensic medical report obtained from the hospital, the signs of assault on Aslan's body were recorded as follows:
Abrasion on the left scapula (shoulder blade)
Abrasion on the back of the left arm
Erythema (redness) on the left hand
It was stated that the marks on the young man's body confirm the medical findings in the report and reflect the severity of the incident.
BACKGROUND OF THE TENSION: THE ABSOLUTE NULLITY RULING
At the root of this crisis at the provincial headquarters lies the recently issued "absolute nullity" (mutlak butlan) ruling.
The Ankara Regional Court of Justice 36th Civil Chamber, in its decision dated May 21, 2026, ruled for "absolute nullity" (invalidity) regarding the 38th CHP Ordinary Congress, and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was reinstated to the chairmanship.
Following this development, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and his supporters, referred to as "absolute nullity supporters," drew significant backlash, and tensions rose between them and citizens supporting İmamoğlu and Özgür Özel.
