Terrifying moments at Göztepe City Hospital: Surgery elevator falls

At the Göztepe Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital, serving in Istanbul's Kadıköy district, 8 people, including a cancer patient, were trapped in an elevator for approximately 45 minutes due to a malfunction in the surgery elevator. It was reported that the patient was rescued following the intervention of fire department crews called to the scene.

In the incident that occurred on Monday, December 1, the patient, who was undergoing cancer treatment, was being transported to the hospital's -1 floor for medical tests. However, a malfunction occurred in elevator number 13, which operates with a special card belonging to the surgery department.

ELEVATOR WENT TO THE 8TH FLOOR, DOORS DID NOT OPEN

According to the report by Birgün, a total of 8 people, including the patient on a stretcher, 2 doctors, and 1 hospital attendant, entered the elevator. The elevator first went to the 8th floor; attempts were made to open the doors, but they did not open. It then descended to the 5th floor, where the door opened briefly and closed again.

FELL INTO THE SHAFT WHILE DESCENDING

The elevator then suddenly fell into the shaft while moving downward and stopped between two floors. Upon this, one of the doctors called hospital staff to report that they were trapped in the elevator. It was reported that despite being told that the technical service would be informed, no intervention was made for the first 20 minutes.

MOTOR FAILURE DETECTED

In a follow-up call made by the doctor, they were informed that there was a fault in the elevator's motor section, that elevator technicians had been called, and that they were waiting for them to arrive. The elevator doors were pried open by an electrical technician after approximately 45 minutes.

PATIENT AND DOCTORS CLIMBED OUT

After the doors were opened, the patient's relative, the doctors, and other staff climbed out. The patient on the stretcher was removed with the help of fire department crews after the elevator was brought to the floor level.

Regarding the incident, the patient's relative stated that this was a surgery elevator, noting that there could have been a patient who had just undergone surgery inside, and that the event posed a life-threatening risk.
