That municipal practice had drawn backlash: A step back from the government
High land fair value assessments reflected in property taxes drew criticism from both citizens and the AKP. Erdoğan has ordered a regulation against the municipalities' practices.
The AKP has placed the high fair value increases implemented by municipalities on its agenda. During the AKP Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting chaired by President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, attention was drawn to the increase in land fair values, which serve as the basis for property taxes. Following the significant backlash from citizens over the rising values, the AKP decided to take a step back.
A STEP BACK AFTER CITIZEN BACKLASH
The high level of fair values used in property tax calculations has caused significant public discontent. These increases have particularly raised the financial burden on property owners, and the implementation of these high values by municipalities has drawn serious criticism from citizens. Following the backlash, the AKP decided to take a step back regarding these practices and stated that new regulations for municipalities would be introduced.
INSTRUCTIONS FROM ERDOĞAN TO PARTY MEMBERS
According to a report by Türkiye Gazetesi, President Erdoğan issued instructions to party members following these developments, stating, "Make a regulation within the will of the Parliament. Prevent extraordinary practices that are beyond acceptability and find a permanent solution. Take measures to ensure such things do not happen again."
