In the Çankaya district of Ankara, Saliha Akkaş, a staff member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), was murdered by her husband, Salih Akkaş, from whom she was in the process of divorcing. The 40-year-old woman went out to the balcony to ask for help after being stabbed 37 times in her home, but she could not be saved. Following the murder, the assailant ex-husband, Salih Akkaş, ended his own life by hanging himself from the ceiling.

SHE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF DIVORCING, HER HUSBAND CAME TO HER HOME

The incident occurred on Güvenlik Street in the Çankaya district. 45-year-old Salih Akkaş went to the home of his wife, Saliha Akkaş, with whom he had been living separately for some time, under the pretext of talking. The argument that broke out between them quickly turned into violence. Salih Akkaş stabbed 40-year-old Saliha Akkaş in the throat and various parts of her body with a knife he had brought with him.

Akkaş, who went out to the balcony while severely wounded, cried for help, saying, "Help, police, ambulance." Upon the notification of neighborhood residents, health teams arrived at the scene and took Saliha Akkaş to the hospital. However, despite all interventions, she lost her life in the early hours of the morning. The murder suspect, Salih Akkaş, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling at the scene.

MASSACRE WITH 37 STAB WOUNDS

The testimonies of neighborhood residents revealed the horror of the incident. Market employee Hamide Gülüş stated that the woman was crying for help from the balcony and said the following:

“There were sounds from the balcony; she was saying ‘help, police, ambulance.’ She had already fallen onto the balcony. Then the police, ambulance, and so on arrived, and they intervened. CPR was performed. He had stabbed her 37 times. It was very bad, she was covered in blood. It doesn't end, it never ends, it doesn't end in any way.”

Another neighborhood resident, Öznur Özkartal, said, “This poor woman went out to the balcony and asked for help. When she asked for help, she became ill and passed away. The man hanged himself inside.”

HE HAD A CRIMINAL RECORD, HAD RECEIVED A RESTRAINING ORDER

It was learned that Saliha and Salih Akkaş had been living separately for some time and that one of their children was staying with the mother and the other with the father. It was revealed that the murder suspect, Salih Akkaş, had a criminal record for the crimes of “threatening and insulting a spouse” and “violating a restraining order.”

Saliha Akkaş’s body was taken to the Ankara Forensic Medicine Institute for autopsy procedures. Her family and relatives, who were waiting in front of the Forensic Medicine Institute, were overcome with grief. Her mother, brother, and colleagues from the TBMM had a difficult time during the painful wait. Akkaş’s body was sent to her hometown of Bingöl and laid to rest.

Following the incident, a statement was made from the official social media account of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The statement included the following expressions:

“We are deeply saddened by the brutal murder of our TBMM Department of Support Services staff member Saliha Akkaş by her husband. We wish God’s mercy upon our valued colleague and extend our condolences to her grieving family, relatives, and TBMM employees. May she rest in peace.”

SILENT SCREAM AT THE TBMM

The femicide also resonated in the Parliament. A one-minute silent sit-in protest was held for Saliha Akkaş on the steps of the TBMM Public Relations building. Many male employees also participated in the protest, which was led by female employees.

The protest, which was also attended by CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir, CHP Ankara Deputy Semra Dinçer, DEM Party Erzurum Deputy Meral Danış Beştaş, and some parliamentary advisors, ended with applause.
