The murderer was granted a good conduct reduction: Supreme Court's Pınar Gültekin ruling protested

Women's organizations gathered in front of the Kadıköy Süreyya Opera House to hold a protest against the 'good conduct reduction' ruling issued by the 1st Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court in the Pınar Gültekin case. In a joint press statement at the end of the protest, the women's organizations questioned the good conduct reduction granted to the murderer Avcı, reminding that Pınar Gültekin was killed in a premeditated manner and that the suspect had tortured her.

In the Pınar Gültekin case, the court had sentenced Cemal Metin Avcı to aggravated life imprisonment. The court's ruling included the grounds of 'killing with monstrous intent by inflicting torture and with premeditation.'

However, the 1st Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court applied a good conduct reduction to Avcı, taking into account his behavior in court and his criminal record. Women's organizations came together in Kadıköy to oppose the good conduct reduction granted by the court.

'6284 IS STILL NOT BEING IMPLEMENTED...'

Reading the statement during the protest organized against the Supreme Court's ruling, Tuğgen Gümüşay asked the court: ''Which behavior of Cemal Metin Avcı did you decide was not 'monstrous'?''

The following statements were included in the women's organizations' declaration:

''We are very familiar with these policies of impunity. While perpetrators are protected with sentences that act like rewards and have no deterrent effect, violence against women is encouraged. In 2024, 394 women were murdered by men. The government, far from stopping femicides, further emboldens perpetrators with its policies of impunity, and Law No. 6284 is still not being effectively implemented...

State institutions, which are tasked with preventing violence against women and building safe cities and homes for women, fail to fulfill their duties through their law enforcement and judiciary, thereby encouraging killers to commit new attacks. Every perpetrator draws their strength from previously unpunished crimes, protected murderers, good conduct reductions, the questioning of women's lifestyles in court cases under the guise of 'unjust provocation,' amnesties issued in packages, and, as a whole, the policies of impunity that pave the way for violence against women.''
