The Palu Family case that gripped Turkey becomes a documentary: Here is the latest on Tuncer Ustael

The Palu family case, which remained a major topic of discussion in Turkey for a long time, is now appearing before viewers once again in a documentary production. HBO Max Turkey will release the project titled “Palu Ailesi: Karanlık Sarmal” (The Palu Family: Dark Spiral) starting May 8.

The production, which bears the HBO Original signature and consists of three parts, examines the process regarding the Palu family in detail. The footage in the first trailer shared has already sparked widespread reaction on social media in a short time.

The trailer also includes current footage from prison of Tuncer Ustael, who is serving an aggravated life sentence. Ustael's statements, seen while he is in a single-person cell, are among the highlights of the documentary.

THE PROCESS THAT BEGAN WITH A MISSING PERSONS CASE

Meryem Tahnal, who lived in the Körfez district, went missing in 2008, and her daughter Melike Tahnal went missing in 2009. Despite the efforts carried out by police teams, no findings regarding the missing persons could be reached. As excavation work carried out in Kocaeli and Sakarya also yielded no results, the search activities were terminated.

In the trial held at the Kocaeli 7th High Criminal Court, the defendant Tuncer Ustael was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of “intentional killing of a lineal relative, spouse, or sibling with monstrous feeling or by causing torment” against Meryem Tahnal. Additionally, he was sentenced to a total of 7 years in prison, including 4 years for “deprivation of liberty” and 3 years for “misuse of a credit card.”

Emine Ustael, as well as Havva, İsa, and Ayşe Palu, were sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison each for the crime of “aiding and abetting intentional killing.”

It was ruled that F.P. be sentenced to 8 years and 4 months in prison due to being a minor at the time of the crime, and the individual was released.

The Sakarya Regional Court of Justice 1st Criminal Chamber overturned the local court's decision on the grounds that a procedural error was made in the trial because the defendants were represented by the same lawyer. Following this, the case was retried at the Kocaeli 7th High Criminal Court.

In the public prosecutor's opinion, an aggravated life sentence was requested for the detained defendant Tuncer Ustael, and prison sentences ranging from 16 years to 23 years and six months were requested for the other 5 family members.

In the retrial, Tuncer Ustael was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of “intentional killing” and 7 years in prison for other crimes. The other 5 family members received prison sentences ranging from 8 years and 4 months to 14 years and 2 months.
