Theologian Emine Yücel says 'they use it for perception management': She removes her headscarf

Theologian Emine Yücel removed her headscarf during a live broadcast, citing the "law regarding the collection of stray dogs," and announced that she would no longer wear it.

In her statement, Yücel said, "An importance, value, and mission are attributed to the headscarf that are not attributed to any other principle of Islam. Because of this attributed mission, global imperialism uses our headscarf, along with our religious sentiments, most of all for perception management."

In its Friday sermon on August 1, the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) argued that the fashion industry, designers, and certain media circles encourage nudity and devalue covering up under the guise of "freedom" and "modernity." The sermon stated, "Wearing short clothes and transparent garments, regardless of where or for what purpose, is a violation of Allah's command to cover up and is haram. Those who wear tight clothing that reveals their limbs are, in the words of the Prophet (pbuh), 'clothed yet naked.'"

Writer Berrin Sönmez, who wears a headscarf, had previously announced that she removed her headscarf in protest of this sermon and subsequent sermons regarding women's inheritance rights.

This time, theologian Emine Yücel announced that she removed her headscarf due to the "law regarding the collection of stray dogs."

Theologian Yücel, who is also a member of the Social Well-being Association (Toplumsal Esenlik Derneği), removed her headscarf on live television and said, "I was going to do this act last year, but a large rally could not be organized. I renewed myself by first leaving the bonnet, and now I am removing the headscarf completely. This is a reactive act."

Stating that the meaning attributed to the headscarf by some segments has gone to extremes, Yücel noted that global powers use this meaning for perception management. Yücel said, "An importance, value, and mission are attributed to the headscarf that are not attributed to any other principle of Islam. Because of this attributed mission, global imperialism uses our headscarf, along with our religious sentiments, most of all for perception management."

Theologian Cemil Kılıç also quoted the video and supported Yücel, saying, "Emine Hoca is an Ataturkist and a Turkish nationalist. Best of luck. She is from the Social Well-being Association family."
